Your child is bringing home individualized spelling lists this week based on a spelling inventory given at the beginning of the year. The word list will include spelling pattern (chunking) words which will have a pattern or rhyme, as well as high frequency words.  While your child may have only 8 or less words to sort and practice, these words are only the chosen few to represent the spelling patterns being taught for the week.   For the test your child will be asked to spell words that follow the same pattern but are not on the list. Rather than memorizing the spelling of the words, we want your child to learn and apply the spelling patterns for each week.

The test will include a sentence to be written by the student which will be dictated by the teacher.  Students need to use a capital letter at the beginning of the sentence and where ever else appropriate, punctuation at the end.  All words in the sentence need to be spelled correctly with spaces used between words

Here are activities to do at home during the week to help learn the spelling patterns.

MONDAY: Cut and sort into categorize. Have your child read the words and tell you why the words are sorted in a particular way.  Find rhyming words to add to each category.

TUESDAY: Do a blind or no peeking sort. Lay down a word from each category as a header and then read the rest of the words aloud along with additional words that would fit in each category. Your child must indicate where the words go without seeing the word.

WEDNESDAY: Assist your child in doing a word hunt, looking for words in a familiar book that have the same sound, pattern, or both. Try to find 2-3 words for each category.

THURSDAY: Do a writing sort to prepare for the Friday test. As you call out words in a random order, your child should write them in the correct category. Keep ALL spelling words at home to practice them in the weeks to follow the test as well. Please use these spelling ideas to practice spelling words EVERY night.
